Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a text file format that lets you reuse content—text, table data, and graphics—in a variety of applications and media. One advantage of using XML is that you can separate form and content. After you add XML tags to your InDesign document, you can export the contents to an XML file. This XML file can then be reformatted for any media, including wireless devices, the Web, eBooks, InDesign ® documents, and the printed page. XML is intended for data exchange, reuse, and publishing on the Web. Like HTML, XML uses elements and structure. However, unlike HTML, XML lets users define a custom set of element tags. Another difference is that XML does not preserve formatting—only content.
