Microsoft commissioned VeriTest, the testing division of Lionbridge Technologies, to measure the potential improvements in developer productivity realized between the development platforms of Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic 2005 for client development. Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic 2005 are event driven programming languages that can be used to develop custom applications for client, web, office, and device development. The approach to this study was to recruit experienced developers in each of the two development disciplines, Visual Basic 6, and Visual Basic 2005. This resulted in two equal-sized developer groups, four developers in each group. These developers were each given a specification to work with. These development specifications were for a client application. During this study, each developer had five days to develop as much as possible of their individual specification. The specifications themselves were designed so as to make it difficult or impossible for the individual developers to complete all the tasks within the allotted five days.
