Abstract Security in the sense of data protection is gaining more and more importancewith SAP R/3 customers. SAP supports strong security mechanisms toprotect the interests of the user, but has decided not to include cryptographicmodules in its own software. Instead, external products can be integratedwhich have been developed by security professionals. Both Secure Network Communications (SNC) and Secure Store and ForwardMechanisms (SSF) support state-of-the-art authentication, data integrity, andconfidentiality services for the R/3 System by integrating an externalsecurity product using well-defined application programming interfaces. Atthe present time, SECUDE is the only product that is commercially availableto SAP customers, but additional product certification will begin in early1998.
