In computer systems, communications protocols are guidelines for formatting the messages sent from one hardware or software component to another, for example, from a client’s web browser to an application server. Since effective communications cannot occur without an agreed upon format, the communications protocol is key to successful communication in any interaction involving computer systems. The most important communications protocol for all web applications, including those built using Oracle products, is Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
