Content Summary : An experimental environment for reverse engineering Java software is discussed. Static information is extractedfrom class files and viewed using Rigi reverse engineeringenvironment. The dynamic information is generated by run-ning the target software under a debugger. The debuggedevent trace information is viewed as scenario diagrams us-ing a prototype tool called SCED. In SCED state diagramscan be synthesized automatically from scenario diagrams.Dynamic information can also be attached to the static Rigigraph. Both static and dynamic views contain informationabout software artifacts and their relations. Such overlap-ping information forms a connection for information ex-change between the views. SCED scenario diagrams areused for slicing the Rigi view and the Rigi view, in turn, isused to guide the generation of SCED scenario diagramsand for raising their level of abstraction... An experimental environment has been built to reverse engineer Java software. The static information is extractedfrom Java byte code. It can be saved in Rigi Standard Format (RSF) and viewed with the Rigi reverse engineeringtool [10]. The dynamic event trace information is generatedautomatically as a result of running the target system undera debugger. The event trace can be saved in the SCEDscenario diagram format and viewed with a prototype toolSCED [6]. In SCED state diagrams can be synthesizedautomatically from scenario diagrams. This facility is used to examine the total behavior of an object or a singlemethod, disconnected from the rest of the system.
