EXECUTIVE S SUMMARY This study compares the five-year total cost of ownership (TCO) ofMicrosoft Windows 2000 server environments with that of Linuxserver environments (from multiple Linux vendors) at 100 differentNorth American companies. Consideration was given to the followingfive unique workloads: • Network infrastructure • File serving • Print serving • Web serving • Security applications The bottom-line results of users interviewed in this research effort show that the Microsoft Windows 2000 environment offered a comparable, if not superior, five-year TCO advantage in four of the five workloads, the exception being the Web-serving workload. Table 1 shows the overall findings
