In 1990, on a train ride from Manchester to London, Harry Potter popped spontaneously and vividly into the mind of Joanne Katherine Rowling. 1 Little did Rowling know that both she and the young boy of her imagination would be household names worldwide less than a decade later. Harry Potter has grown in fame and popularity as the hero of what will eventually be Rowling’s seven-book series, five of which have been published to date. 2 The books have been translated into numerous languages, and it has been estimated that the books have sold over 100 million copies throughout the world. 3 The books have proven to be popular not only among children but among adults as well, and although they have received a good deal of praise, they and Rowling have been subject to sharp criticism as well. In the following, I will first offer a brief plot summary of three of the books in Rowling’s series, and then I will attempt to give a critical analysis of Rowling’s work thus far by exploring Rowling and the acclaim and criticism that she and the series have received; I will do this in order to launch a better analysis of Harry Potter’s potential for promoting moral development.
