Content Summary :
Introduction This submission urges the inquiry to seriously examine the contribution the Australian Government can make in furthering scientific research into feasible fusion energy. In particular a fusion concept known as “Focus Fusion” deserves attention. Focus Fusion has been the subject of ongoing research in US University laboratories since receiving a grant from NASA. Its chief proponent, Eric Lerner, has confirmed key aspects of his theoretical work in such experiments. The prospect is that with a fairly modest budget, and within a decade, Focus Fusion could either be confirmed as a clean, cheap and plentiful source of energy, or confirmed to be non-viable. Research must be done in case it is the former. Focus Fusion stands in contrast with the ITER Tokamak research to be undertaken in France. ITER acknowledges they have no prospect of determining the feasibility of fusion power before 2050 1 . As this submission will describe, the Focus Fusion concept has numerous advantages over the Tokamak fusion concept.
