COLD FRAMES AND HOTBEDS A cold frame or its heated version, the hotbed, is a miniature greenhouse used to start vegetableor flower seeds in the early spring. Heat for a cold frame comes from the sun. During thedaytime the soil is heated. At night the cover slows the loss of heat. Ventilation is accomplishedby raising or lowering the cover.
CONSTRUCTION Figure 1 illustrates a typical cold frame. Old storm windows make an excellent cover. Paintwood parts with a primer and one or two coats of exterior white paint to preserve the wood andreflect light to the plants. Some people apply a wood preservative, such as copper naphthenate,before painting. Do not use cresote or pentachlorophenol preservatives because they releasevapors that are toxic to plants.
