sleep) each year. Unless every new-born puppy is guaranteed aloving
home, dogs should bespayed or neutered before they reach sexual
maturity (6 to 16months of age, depending on size and breed)... The
best rule to follow whenbreeding dogs is to be certainthat they are
physically mature.This means that both the bitchand the male dog should
be 18to 24 months of age, by whichtime the bitch should be in hersecond
or third heat period.Since ovulation usually occurson the second day of
estrus, it ishighly effective to breed thebitch as soon as she is
sexuallyreceptive to the male dog andagain two days later. The bitch is
usually brought tothe male dog for breeding.Courtship behavior begins
withthe male dog sniffing at the bitch's face and flank andlicking of
the vulva. Whenready, the bitch presents herhindquarters to the male
dogand stands still with her tailtoward one side.
