A meta-analysis of prospective trials with long-term follow-up including patients with similarexposure to selegiline as in the UK Parkinson Dis-ease Research Group study was performed. 26 There was no difference in mortality between selegiline andnonselegiline treatment groups. Analysis of levodopaplus selegiline versus levodopa alone did not reveal adifference in mortality rates. The Parkinson StudyGroup (PSG) reported that there was no difference inmortality in the 800 original DATATOP subjects whohad been assigned to deprenyl, tocopherol, or com-bined treatments after an average follow-up of 8.2years. The mortality rate observed in these patientswas very similar to that expected in the age- andsex-matched US population.
