Pre-excitation syndrome background Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a type of pre-excitation syndrome. The premise of pre-excitation isthat atrial excitation reaches the ventricles ahead of time secondary to the existence of a bypass around, or shortcircuit past, the AV node. Thus, the excitation moves atrioventricularly. Without having to wait at the upper AVnode, the impulse rapidly invades the ventricles. The AV node, with its junctional fibers extending toward the atria, links the latter with the rest of the atrioven-tricular system. The strategic position of the AV node makes this structure an integral part of the specializedconducting system. An essential function of the AV conduction system is the transmission of the impulses fromthe atria to the ventricles. In addition, the cardiac impulse is delayed .06 seconds. Through this delay in thepassage of the excitation wave from the upper to the lower chamber, the atrial contraction has ample time tocontribute to the filling of the ventricles
