People continue to think of osteoporosis as a disease affectingonly postmenopausal and elderly women. In one study ofseniors, about half of the men who answered the question-naire were not aware that they could have the condition.Another survey showed that primary care physicians weremore likely to treat female fracture patients for osteoporosisthan males. In spite of recurring fractures, statistics point to astartling neglect in diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in men (see Table 2, page 8). Fewer men than women receivepost-fracture antiresorptive treatment — as opposed to sim-ply calcium and vitamin D supplementation — or longer-term follow-up with BMD measurements. This is ofparticular concern since the incidence of fractures in men isrelatively high, and their impact is greater than in women.The mortality rate following hip fracture is up to two-timeshigher in men than in women.
