Before going into depth, outline the general organization of the nervous system on theboard, comparing the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to the peripheralnervous system (the cranial and spinal nerves). Further outline the two divisions ofthe peripheral nervous system, the sensory and motor divisions, followed by the twosubdivisions of the motor division, the somatic (voluntary) and autonomic (involuntary)nervous systems. Give a brief description of the distinct role of each division. Point out that any attempt to divide the nervous system into discrete sectionsis done strictly to help us understand the workings of this complex system, andthat the divisions are man-made for simplification purposes only. Discuss the neuroglia as the “glue that holds the nervous system together.” These supportingcells are frequently ignored in favor of the “star” (i.e., the functional neuron),and it is wise to emphasize their importance early. Although the functional unit of the nervous system is the neuron, the neurogliaprovide them with support, protection, access to nutrients, and numerous othervaluable services.
