The peripheral nervous system consists of the afferent (sensory) and efferent (motor) systems. The efferent system is subdivided into: 1) Somatic nervous system a) Conduct impulse from CNS to skeletal muscle. b) Voluntary; conscious control 2) Autonomic nervous system a) Conduct impulse from CNS to smooth muscle (intestine, bladder, and uterus), cardiac muscle and glands. b) Involuntary i) Sympathetic (1) The Sympathetic Nervous System is involved in the fight or flight response. Fight or Flight Response: pupils dilate; heart rate increases; blood pressure increases; vasoconstriction in skin; dilation of other vessels leading toward muscles/lungs/heart; increased breathing; blood sugar levels increase; epinephrine/norepinephrine released; non-essential processes inhibited
