This represents an increase over the past decade of over 2% per year. 4 In the USA, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer inwomen. Like most cancers, it is a disease of ageing, almost 70% of casesbeing diagnosed in women of 55 years of age or older. 5 Whilst being the most significant cancer in terms of incidence, in the USA, breast cancermortality in females is second to the mortality due to lung cancer. 6 Breast cancer has a poor survival rate and, in common with all cancers, its prognosis depends upon stage at diagnosis; 5-year survival rates rangefrom 84% in women diagnosed with Stage I disease to 18% in womendiagnosed with Stage IV disease.
