What causes brain cancer? We don’t know what causes brain cancer, but some factors appear to increase the risk of developing it: • Age – brain tumours can occur at any age, but usually after 40. Children are usually affected between the ages of 3 and 12. • Gender – more men develop brain tumours. • Family history of gliomas. • Workplace exposure to ionizing radiation, formaldehyde, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile. Some people develop brain cancer without any of these risk factors. How is brain cancer diagnosed? Your doctor may have suspected brain cancer after talking with you about your health and completing a physical examination. A number of special tests are usually necessary to confirm a brain cancer diagnosis. They include: Imaging studies : X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans (computerized axial tomography), MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging) and bone scans allow tissues, organs and bones to be examined in more detail. They may be uncomfortable but are usually painless.
