What is avian influenza or bird flu? Avian influenza, also known as AI or bird flu, is a viral disease characterized in domestic poultry by respiratory problems, depression, decreased egg produc- tion, and reduced feed and water intake. There are three major types or genera of influenzavirus – A, B, and C. Types B and C affect primarily humans while Type A can infect a wide variety of animals such as whales, pigs, horses, dogs, cats, tigers, leopards, rabbits, rats, ferrets, macaques, humans, and birds. How does the disease spread? The virus is released in respiratory secretions and excrement from infected birds. It can be spread from bird to bird by direct contact with or ingesting fecal mate- rial from an infected bird, by aerosol, or by way of fomites
