Fir trees retain their needles much better than pine and spruce. One of the least expensive trees is the douglas fir, which is usually harvested from the forest. It is a more open tree because it has not been pruned. Plantation grown trees such as grand, noble, nordmann and frazier firs have thicker branch structure. The alpine fir is sometimes plantation grown and sometimes forest grown. It is a slender tree with a lot of character suitable for limited space. Grand and noble firs are the most popular. If you like a very thick tree with long needles, the scotch pine is a good choice.
