Content Summary : INTRODUCTION This paper examines the information integration features of Oracle Database 10g, andcompares them with the features of SQL Server 2005. It specifically looks atfederating data via distributed SQL, and sharing information via replication, messagequeuing, and event notifications. In all areas, Oracle continues to provide a morerobust and flexible solution. Oracle Database 10g and SQL Server 2005 provide similar features for federating data.However, Oracle Database 10g provides better transparent integration of foreign datastores. SQL Server 2005 provides incremental improvements to their replication, distributedoperations, and heterogeneous access. It also introduces an entirely new messagequeuing feature integrated into the database called Service Broker. The mid-tiermessage queuing solution provided by MSMQ continues as a feature external to SQLServer. Oracle Streams and SQL Server 2005 Transactional Replication are two features thatprovide server-to-server replication. Streams is superior to Transactional Replicationbecause of its broader feature set and flexibility. Most notably, Streams supports trueupdate anywhere operation with full conflict detection and resolution. TransactionalReplication is predominantly a one-way replication solution that requires datapartitioning when updates can occur in more than one location.
