Ticking Noise On 2001-2003 Mazda 3.0LDuratec Engines The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information on a ticking noise on 2001-2003 Mazda 3.0L Duratec engines. This noise can easily be misdiagnosed as a lifternoise. Tappet noise can be heard from the left cylinder head when the engine is at operating temperature. The camshaft cap, marked 8L on the left bank, not being properly fitted inthe cylinder head may cause this noise. Because of this misalignment, the cap’s edge makescontact with the camshaft, resulting in a ticking noise. To repair this noise, make sure the engine is at operating temperature. Remove the left side valve cover and loosen the bolts which hold the intake side camshaft cap marked 8L inplace. DO NOT REMOVE THE CAP FROM THE HEAD. The use of a flat-bladed screw-driver will assist in pushing the camshaft cam toward the front of the engine for properalignment. Once the cam is pressed in place, tighten it down to 72 in/lbs.
