Vehicle mileage, digital odometer information, SI light status, etc. are stored in a code-plug (a non-volatile memory); meaning that the information will remain stored even if unplugged or disconnected from 12V. The code plug eliminated the need for batteries used in early models. Models before 1989 have the code plug located inside the brown connector of the cluster, later models have it plugged in the backside of the mother board. The code-plug (at times) could be the cause of failure for some of the functions of the instrument cluster, and it is only available for purchase via authorized BMW retailers. For a successful bench test of the instrument cluster, it is necessary for the customer to supply the code-plug.
